Famed as a land of spectacular sunsets and great beaches
One of the most fascinating towns on the Island, Forio is famed as a land of spectacular sunsets, great beaches, enormous thermal parks, and extraordinary ecological tour routes in the wild natural surroundings of Ischia.
Forio is also a land of history and culture. All you need to do is to stroll through the streets of the old centre to run into, at every step, a monument to the past, be it a church or a Saracen tower, a votive shrine from the eighteenth century or a delightful little square.
Thanks to its charm which is a little “Arab”, to its year round temperate climate and the friendly charm of its inhabitants, this town was chosen by major European intellectuals as a second home.
At Forio, Luchino Visconti had his villa, La Columbaia, immersed in the Zaro wood, which is today a museum open to the public.
At Maria’s Bar Internazionale which you will find on the main street, the poet Auden was a habitual guest, with his painter friends, writers and directors from all over the world. Entering the bar, you can still admire the paintings on the walls by the most celebrated artists who have stopped off here and who have made gifts of their work to their famed hostess, Maria.
Forio is also one of the most vivacious places on the island from the point of view of entertainment, apart from the big events which constantly enliven the Forian summer - the town teems with places to hang out, bars, taverns, restaurants, pizzerias, pubs and discotheques. Along the street that faces onto the port you will find the wild summer movida with jazz and pop concerts, piano bars and lots of little venues to keep late hours in the magical Forian night.
